WOOD
Also known as plantation shutters, wooden shutters require periodic cleaning to maintain its beauty. Cleaning can be done once a week, also depending on the environmental conditions of your home. If your place is more prone to dust or dirt, cleaning would be necessary more often.
To clean wooden shutters, vacuum lightly to remove dust and small particles on the surface. Another method is to wipe the shutters thoroughly using a dusting cloth sprayed with wood polish. Use a toothbrush to reach crevices and other hard to reach areas that can easily harbor dust. NEVER use soap and water when cleaning as these may cause damage or warping.
VINYL / PLASTIC
An advantage of vinyl and plastic blinds is that they are fairly easy to maintain. These types of materials need cleaning once a week or more often depending on your environment.
For its cleaning process, mix a teaspoon of dish soap with a quart of warm water to make a cleaning solution. Dip a dusting cloth into the solution and wash the blinds with it thoroughly. Use another cloth dampened with plain water to rinse away the soap solution. Wipe the blinds with a dry clean cloth. To reach crevices and grooves, you can use a toothbrush dipped in the sudsy cleaning solution.
ALUMINIUM
Aluminium is an excellent material for external window coverings because of its durability. As it can withstand the elements, aluminium shutters are typically used in the exterior side of windows.
Like plastic and vinyl, aluminium is easy to clean. You can wash the blinds with soap and water then dry them thoroughly by wiping or air drying. If you only have time for a quick clean, a simple dusting will do. To maintain its functionality, it is advised to wash and grease the hinges every two years.
ADDITIONAL TIPS:
- When cleaning or washing your blinds, always start from the top and gradually work your way down.
- Soap residue should be removed otherwise it will leave unsightly marks.
- Refrain from using specialised cleaning products as they may contain chemicals that can damage or stain your blinds.
- If you’re using a ladder or step stool to reach the higher parts of your windows, make sure it is positioned on a flat or level surface to prevent it from tipping over. It would be better to have somebody else hold the ladder to keep it steady while you do the cleaning.
